Philanthropy Southwest and Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR) are pleased to offer a special program for foundation representatives—including board members and trustees as well as executive and program staff—that will provide a first-hand look at how local, state, and federal immigration policies are impacting communities throughout Texas.

This event will take place in Harlingen, Texas and begin with a funders’ briefing followed by site visits to key destinations in the Rio Grande Valley.

In addition to Valley International Airport (Harlingen, TX), nearby airports include Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport (Brownsville, TX) and McAllen Miller International Airport (McAllen, TX) both of which are approximately 35 minutes away with service offered by American Airlines, United Airlines and other carriers.

The funders’ briefing will feature expert speakers – from national policy analysts and demographers to business leaders and local elected officials – who will provide a factual grounding in existing and emerging laws and policies, and provide context for current realities facing immigrant and refugee children and families across the state. There will be opportunities to engage in discussion with colleagues on the relevance of these issues for a wide range of grantmaking priorities. During the learning tour, participants will visit a detention center where immigrants are being held for removal proceedings, a border patrol station, and/or a shelter for unaccompanied children. In addition, the group will hear from local service providers and community leaders who are working with the immigrant and refugee population in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to do deeper dive on a complex and important issue—as seen from a variety of perspectives—for the state of Texas and the country as a whole.
